Munawar Faruqui’s foray into acting with First Copy was undoubtedly a significant event, drawing massive attention due to his star power. But the show itself? While providing a gritty, atmospheric look at ’90s Mumbai film piracy, the debut season was, frankly, mid. It garnered a dedicated following but left critics and many viewers wanting more substance than style, often criticised for pacing issues and shallow supporting characters.
Which is why Season 2 faces a huge challenge ahead of its upcoming release on November 5, scheduled for Amazon MX Player.
The second week of November is a graveyard for any series that doesn’t bring its A-game. First Copy Season 2 is walking into a streaming war zone, and if it’s merely good, it’ll be forgotten before the month is over.
The streaming calendar for the first half of November is stacked with established, high-quality franchises and monumental global releases. And First Copy S2 will face tough competition from these major upcoming titles.
The show’s November 5 release immediately puts it up against the global cinematic event The Fantastic Four: First Steps (JioHotstar). Just two days later, the market will be flooded by two major titles: the prestige Hollywood film Frankenstein (Netflix) and the return of the proven Indian powerhouse Maharani Season 4 (SonyLIV), an established political drama with massive local viewership.
This competitive pressure only intensifies mid-month with the arrival of the Emmy-winning gold standard of Indian procedurals, Delhi Crime Season 3 (Netflix), on November 13. Finally, the latter half of the month will be dominated by what is arguably the ultimate OTT event, The Family Man Season 3 (Prime Video), on November 21, which will inevitably take over all media and audience discussion.
This naturally puts a lot of eyes on First Copy. The second season can’t simply rely on the charm of Munawar Faruqui or the intrigue surrounding the theme of piracy. It needs to be tightly written, high-stakes, and dramatically superior to other November releases.
Season 1 was criticised for its slow-paced episodes and redundant subplots. Season 2 must be relentless. Every episode needs to escalate the stakes, focusing sharply on Arif’s central journey, from being an outsider to battling powerful, era-defining enemies.
Several intriguing supporting characters, such as Mona and Pravin, remained underutilised in the debut season. They deserve more screen time in the second. Moreover, the early 2000s setting, with its shift from VCRs to CDs, offers a unique backdrop. Season 2 must capitalise on this transition by exploring the evolving economics and technology of film piracy in greater detail.
Let’s see how First Copy Season 2 turns out. Stay tuned for more updates.
