Netflix has kind of cracked the code and it very well knows now the nerve of Indian audience as to what will make them opt for documentaries on the streaming giant.
If you think it’s the true crime documentaries, then you aren’t thinking in the right direction, although true crimes are one of the most sought after ones globally.
But Netflix has now discovered what is long known yet unsaid, and that is every common Indian person’s keen interest in the personal life of well known public personalities. It is somewhat a guilty pleasure to know what is going on in the lives of our celebrities whether they are people from Indian entertainment industry, sports (specially cricket), politics, or the big business world.
This is evident from their recent Indian documentary catalogue that includes the likes of ‘The Romantics’, ‘Modern Masters: S.S. Rajamouli’, ‘Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale’ or the upcoming ‘Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous’ (December 20, 2024) and ‘The Roshans’ (January 17, 2025).
Netflix’s ‘Indian Predator’ or other true crime documentary series have been great but it caters to a limited set of Indian audience and isn’t as universal as something mentioned above. And given the wide scope of such shows and considering the huge Indian population it’s best to offer what is sought after the most and in this scenario it’s gossip!
It is also the reason Netflix’s ‘Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives’ has worked so well for the streaming giant. You might deny it in your social circle but Netflix is spilling the tea and we know you are interested.
