Rai’s latest intense romantic drama, Tere Ishq Mein, starring the formidable duo of Dhanush and Kriti Sanon. The acquisition is a big win for the streaming giant, as it takes advantage of the growing appetite for high-stakes Indian love stories.
Tere Ishq Mein opened with an impressive collection of INR 19.27 crores worldwide, which showcases the audience’s approval for the film, but also proves how much the viewers are loving its emotionally charged plot and compelling performances from the leading duo.
The film’s positive performance on the big screen mirrors a crucial trend that Netflix has been aggressively and successfully leveraging the immense popularity of Indian romantic dramas on its platform.
The blueprint for this success is demonstrated by many movies belonging to the romance genre which came out this year.
For instance, Suriya’s romantic action masala, Retro, despite an average theatrical performance, found a strong audience on Netflix India. From Malayalam cinema, we have Oho Enthan Baby, a romantic comedy drama, which also enjoyed a strong debut on the platform and remained on its Top 10 movies weekly list for several weeks.
And how can we forget the manner in which YRF’s Saiyaara took Netflix India by storm? This romantic blockbuster, which became the highest-grossing Indian romantic film of all time in its theatrical run, made a spectacular OTT debut in September 2025.
The latest Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor starrer rom-com, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, has also found significant traction on the platform, confirming that the Indian audience is actively seeking out romance content on OTT, particularly on Netflix.
Plus, there are many things that work in favour of Tere Ishq Mein. First, we have Dhanush and Kriti Sanon sharing the screen for the very first time. Moreover, director Aanand L. Rai is known for crafting memorable, rooted love stories like Raanjhanaa.
Like with Raanjhanaa, Rai was able to win the Indian audience’s hearts with his latest offering’s emotional depth, terrific performances, and cultural resonance.
