Ever since Netflix debuted in the Indian OTT space, the platform’s India division has struggled to become the king of this particular space, despite being the number one streaming service globally. But in India, Netflix’s story is quite different. During its overall stay in the country, Netflix has stirred up plenty of controversies, and now, the service can add one more to its growing list.
Netflix India has found itself at the center of a social media storm after posting an edited clip of the highly emotional climax from the film Bajrangi Bhaijaan to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The controversy erupted when eagle-eyed viewers noticed a significant omission: the powerful moment where Munni (Harshaali Malhotra) calls out “Jai Shree Ram” to Pawan (Salman Khan) was reportedly cut from the shared video.
As a result, people are losing their minds over this controversial move, calling Netflix “Hinduphobic” or “anti-Hindu.” Some have even labelled the platform “anti-India.” A large section of Indian netizens has declared the edit a “deliberate act of censorship” on X (formerly Twitter).
Isn’t Netflix India going to respond? This is tragic.. so much nonsense is uncensored on Netflix.. but you want to censor Jai Shree Ram? Pretty sad.. who made the decision to crop that out?

Time to cancel my Netflix Susbscription. Either publish the name of employees you fired for cropping this out or get out of India, we don’t need Hinduphobic channels in India! pic.twitter.com/MVFyiMSyXc

Is this Netflix Pakistan channel? Why have you named it as an Indian? Even if you are Pakistani, you shouldn't have cropped the slogan of 'Jay Shree Ram' in the video. Cropping the slogan only shows your Jihadi mindset. @MIB_India should ban this one in India

Dear @NetflixIndia, posting a cropped 10-second clip from 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' without context can be seen as irresponsible, especially in India where religious tensions are high. This could stir unnecessary conflicts. Share the full scene to avoid misinterpretation. #Netflix https://t.co/hWcP6buUTo

And then you ask why @Netflix is failing in India. @netflix fire your employees in Indian division. They are openly Hindu phobic.
They hate Hindus. This is the reason of your downfall in India.
The movie has a dialogue with Shri Ram and they chopped it off.

Many argue that omitting a religiously charged phrase, even if seen as problematic by some, from a cinematic moment where it holds immense emotional weight disrespects both the film’s artistic integrity and the sentiments of a large part of the audience.
This incident has reignited debates around selective editing, content moderation on streaming platforms, and the portrayal of religious elements in popular media.
Amidst the uproar, Netflix India has deleted the controversial post. However, it seems the damage has already been done, as many users continue to criticize the platform, with some even threatening to cancel their subscriptions.
This episode serves as a strong reminder of the extreme sensitivity surrounding religious and cultural content in India’s diverse and highly vocal digital landscape. For streaming platforms, navigating these waters requires not just adherence to guidelines but also a deep understanding of cultural nuances and the potential ramifications of altering emotionally charged content.
The Bajrangi Bhaijaan controversy highlights that in the digital age, even a small edit can have massive repercussions. Stay tuned for more updates.
