Despite possessing a tremendous amount of acting talent, Kunal Khemu is often described as a highly underrated or underutilised actor. Known for his impeccable comic timing (Lootcase, Go Goa Gone) and surprising dramatic intensity (Abhay), Khemu has frequently been relegated to supporting, albeit amazing and funny, roles in big-budget Bollywood ensembles.
But with his upcoming Netflix series Single Papa, it seems the actor’s career trajectory might take a whole new path.
In a recent interview with IANS, Khemu revealed that saying “yes” to the show was one of his “quickest decisions”. It took just a single episode narration for him to commit, suggesting a confidence in the script that may finally solidify his place as a bankable solo lead in the rapidly evolving Indian OTT landscape. He even highlighted that the series is a “clutter breaker” for Netflix, a light-hearted, funny show that also has emotional depth.
“It’s one of those shows which will make you laugh, but at the same time, it might strike a nerve and be a tear-jerker at some point. So all of those things were lovely. And I love the part that was written for me, which is of Gaurav Gehlot,” said Khemu.
This blending of genres is where Khemu can shine the brightest. The show follows his character, Gaurav Gehlot, a lovable man-child who shocks his family by adopting a baby right after his divorce.
This premise offers the actor a rare but golden chance to showcase his full range. The chaotic comedy of an immature adult handling parenthood, combined with the genuine, heartfelt emotion of an unconventional single father.
For many years, viewers have witnessed Khemu’s brilliance being contained within multi-star projects. His role as the intense and morally ambiguous cop in the Abhay franchise for ZEE5 was a critical success, proving himself to be solid and compelling leading-man material.
Single Papa, thanks to its genre, can emerge as a significant success on Netflix India, allowing Khemu to bridge the gap between his niche critical acclaim and mainstream appeal.
If the series, streaming from December 12, manages to deliver on the promised balance of laughter and tears, it won’t just be another hit for Netflix. It could be the project that cements Kunal Khemu as a true leading man who can carry a show on the strength of his name and talent alone. Stay tuned for more updates.
