SonyLIV’s brand-new original series, 13th: Some Lessons Aren’t Taught in Classrooms, is now available to stream. Whenever SonyLIV launches an original, excitement among audiences naturally spikes, thanks to the streamer’s strong track record of delivering outstanding shows. Add to that the presence of Scam 2003 fame Gagan Dev Riar in the lead, and the anticipation for this series was understandably high.
As usual, we’ve gathered some early reviews of 13th. And, disappointingly, the show seems to have fallen flat.
Overall, the series has received a lukewarm response from both critics and audiences. While many have acknowledged its sincerity, they’ve also highlighted noticeable flaws in execution. The drama is inspired by the real-life journey of educator Mohit Tyagi, diving into the high-pressure world of India’s competitive exam culture, mentorship, second chances, and the struggles of launching an ed-tech venture.
The premise is undeniably strong and well-intentioned, centred on an underdog narrative and a socially conscious mission. However, the execution comes across as slow, predictable, and scattered, failing to expand beyond its initial concept.
One consistent highlight across early reviews is Gagan Dev Riar’s performance, which many hail as the best part of 13th. His heartfelt portrayal of MT Sir captures the character’s vulnerabilities, wisdom, and depth, elevated further by excellent dialogue delivery. He truly anchors the series. Riar also receives strong support from Paresh Pahuja, with the rest of the cast turning in solid performances as well.
Unfortunately, the narrative’s heavy focus on the two leads leaves the supporting characters underdeveloped. Several reviews have even described the series as “boring” and “bland.”
Here’s what some of the early reviews are saying about SonyLIV’s 13th.
#Review: 13th: Some Lessons Aren’t Taught in Classrooms rushes through its five episodes, leaving half-baked arcs and closure that feels like YouTube shorts.
