Being Directed by Hansal Mehta, Indian crime-thriller “The Buckingham Murders,” was theatrically released on 13 September 2024, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan as the main lead.
However, in spite of the buzz, the film’s box office performance has been pretty underwhelming, as it managed to gross only 17 crores worldwide. Because of its underperformance, there’s doubt over its sustenance on OTT.
The movie had an interesting premise and a strong lead, but it failed to connect with a larger audience. It’s about Detective Jasmeet “Jass” Bhamra, who is portrayed by Kareena Kapoor in the middle of trying to solve a murder case of a dead young boy found herself wrestling with her personal pain because of the violence and hate between Sikhs and Muslims in the same community.
The movie aims to intertwine the drama of motherhood, grief, and social discrimination, which has taken place in killing the young boy.
Critics argue that though Kareena has delivered a superb performance, The pace of the film and overused premise went against it. Viewers felt that it dragged, with a lack of suspense and this probably also went to the failure at the box office.
Heavy reliance on social commentaries—the issues of drug addiction and cultural biases probably put off audiences looking for simple entertainment instead of an introspective movie.
However, the dynamics are completely different with an OTT release. Instantaneous impact and competitiveness are great for the box office, but with OTT platforms that rely on long-term watching, good word-of-mouth reviews will eventually draw in a larger, more patient audience.
Given that viewers are searching for something fresh and thought-provoking, this could be its greatest advantage on OTT. Additionally, viewers on OTT who are more receptive to those themes might find greater resonance in the film’s deeper portrayal of tragedy and grief.
There are so many movies that are regarded as classics today, but hardly a known fact is that they never made money the time they were first released. Some of them are like Mera Naam Joker (1970) and Andaz Apna Apna (1994). What would be the classics in the 2020s would be the ones which failed at the box office, but gained love on the OTT platforms after reaching there.
The biggest film to fit this category is Advait Chandan’s 2022 Hindi version of Forrest Gump, Laal Singh Chaddha. Featuring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor, this film hit the screens when there was a lot of stress surrounding calls to boycott Bollywood. However, on its release on Netflix India later in the year, it garnered much appreciation among the viewers.
Even if The Buckingham Murders didn’t go well at the box office; things appear to be looking up for OTT. It appears one of the best ways for the movie to gain broader recognition is through digital releases.
The shift from a poorly received theatrical release to possible success at OTT shows that people’s film-watching habits are unavoidably changing, and releases should adapt accordingly. It’s too soon to tell if it will be popular with OTTs, but the indicators are encouraging.
