Sitaare Zameen Par is finally coming to SonyLIV on April 3, after months of confusion around its release. The film had first come out in theatres in June 2025. After that, Aamir Khan chose a different path instead of a normal OTT release.
He decided to release the film on YouTube with a pay per view model. Viewers had to pay a small amount to watch it. His idea was simple. He believed people should pay for a film directly instead of watching it as part of a subscription. He also felt that early OTT releases reduce theatre audiences.
At first, he said the film would not come to OTT platforms at all. This created strong expectations among fans and the industry. But the YouTube model did not reach as many people as expected. Many viewers still preferred waiting for a regular streaming release.
Now, with the film arriving on SonyLIV, the strategy has clearly changed. The long gap between theatre and OTT release is unusual, but it shows an important lesson. Even big stars and new ideas cannot easily change how audiences watch films today.
In the end, the film followed the same path as most others. It went from theatres to online streaming. The experiment was bold, but the result shows that OTT platforms are still the main way people watch films at home.
