Netflix’s already enormous slate of Indian content is looking at a massive addition, what with GOAT streaming on the platform and Khel Khel Mein soon to follow. However, when it comes to these two big releases from different worlds, would Khel Khel Mein even stand a chance or will GOAT just overshadow everything?
First, let’s talk about GOAT. THE GOAT remake was Vijay 68’s Best of All Time series that premiered on September 5. Critics were mixed on the film, particularly with regards to the its characters and story, but it was an enormous box office hit. The action, Vijay’s double role and that crazy climax had people eating out the screen. Besides, with GOAT coming to Netflix on October 3, it’s current and still top of mind for most. And Vijay’s fans are not going to stop discussing it merely yet, so its momentum in any case.
Then there’s Khel Khel Mein. It had a tough time in theaters. The film released on August 15 where it had to face a huge competition from Stree 2 and Vedaa. But despite solid reviews for Khel Khel Mein and anticipation to see Akshay Kumar in a comedy again it simply didn’t have enough of a screen-count. But it gets a real second swing at that on October 9, when it hits Netflix. Although given the immense presence of GOAT on this platform already, it will be a battle to eat into its share.
That is the thing which people would like in Khel Khel Mein, that it would have fun and casual. Being a comedy-drama, this is a far cry from the kind of mad action sequences seen in GOAT. The cast is just as loaded you’ve got Fardeen Khan, Vaani Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu and more. The film is a remake of Italian film Perfect Strangers, and the plot from there on happens — this sort of funny cum awkward game where secrets start coming out — to just spiral. While GOAT is definitely getting all the action fans, for those looking for a more light and entertaining take, Khel Khel Mein could be your next flick requirement.
Either way, there is plenty of room on Netflix for both films. The big question now is, will Khel Khel Mein also be recognised next to GOAT or are we looking at another battle for trending dominance as Vijay’s film continues to rake in the numbers and massive buzz? Next year will tell us.
