DCUs Creature Commandos will be the most unhinged way to start a cinematic universe. While most of the fans are eyeing Superman: Legacy as the beginning of James Gunn’s new and shiny DCU, the actual usher of the multi-film franchise will be Creature Commandos, an animated series about the most obscure characters of the DC universe taking place of Task Force X, or as we better know it, “Suicide Squad.”.
Recently, the Animation Executive producer Rick Morales and Special Programming EVP Peter Girardi talked about this peculiar choice at SCAD Animation Fest. Peter said, “James loves these lesser-known underdog characters.” And that is true. It is his comfort zone. The director made Guardians of the Galaxy, which were one of the most underknown teams of Marvel, into household names. And it is true he can do the same with creature commands.
However, MCU was already well established, and Guardians was not animation. But this is just the start of DCU, and that too after a massive fall of the previous DCEU. Among other creative decisions, James Gunn has made it clear that all the actors will reprise their roles across all media. So this consistency suggests that we might just see Frank Grillo as Rick Flag and David Harbour’s Frankenstein in live action.
According to Rick Morales, James Gunn is going for a “little taste test or small bite before Superman,” which is essentially the “main course.” With Peacemaker Season 2 in works and Creature Commandos set to release on December 5, DCU is ready to take off under James Gunn yet again.
