Angel Studios, the producer of the highly successful film Sound of Freedom, announced that it will release a powerful film entitled Rule Breakers about Afghanistan’s first all-girls robotics team. The film was known as Afghan Dreamers and starred Nikohl Boosheri and Ali Fazal, among others, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge also in the cast.
This was set between 2017 and 2019, where Rule Breakers tells the story of a courageous college student who recruited girls from local high schools to form a robotics team to challenge social norms and the family expectations. This brave band of girls competes in many international robotics competitions in a very dangerous environment in the political turmoil-afflicted Afghanistan.
Directed by Bill Guttentag, the film emphasizes the importance of STEM education for girls, while depicting the experiences dramatized around Roya Mahboob and her team. Guttentag professes an honor to work along with Mahboob and her sister, Elaha, to bring this story of inspiration to a theater near you.
Laura Overdeck, a producer on the film, has stressed that there is a serious need for such stories in the very volatile times in which we live saying, “The members of the Afghan girls’ robotics team show us the power of knowledge, teamwork, and perseverance.” To her, the movie is a necessary addition to the screening materials available for adolescents.
Angel Studios intends to release Rule Breakers in theaters in March 2025 and also then sell it internationally. The studio operates on a crowdfunding model, which involves the participation of over 375,000 Angel Guild members which works in selecting and supporting different film projects.
