Pluribus, the highly anticipated sci-fi series from Vince Gilligan, the mastermind behind Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is set to premiere on Apple TV on November 7. With enormous fan excitement surrounding it, the series is expected to further strengthen the platform’s growing sci-fi slate.
Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the show follows an author named Carol Sturka (played by Better Call Saul alum Rhea Seehorn), who appears to be the only person not affected by a mysterious virus that has made everyone else in the world relentlessly content and optimistic. In other words, she is the only one who can still feel genuine anger, pain, and, crucially, misery.
This premise is a perfect showcase for Seehorn’s immense talent. As Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, she delivered some of television’s most nuanced portrayals of internal conflict and moral collapse. Here, she portrays the only authentically feeling human in a world of manufactured happiness, someone who alone can see the horror beneath all the smiling.
Watching her fight against a polite, relentlessly cheerful apocalypse is where the series’ true drama, dark humour, and unsettling tension are expected to unfold.
The show has already generated massive buzz, having been picked up by Apple for an unprecedented two-season order before a single episode aired. This move signals Apple’s strong confidence in Gilligan’s vision.
Pluribus marks another major entry in Apple TV’s quietly impressive lineup of sci-fi dramas, which includes the existential corporate nightmare Severance, the subterranean mystery Silo, and the epic sci-fi space opera Foundation.
