Wicked is all set to arrive on your televisions soon. The latest feature adaptation by Jon M. Chu, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel (itself inspired by The Wizard of Oz [1939]), has performed exceptionally well and surpassed all expectations. The American Film Institute has already named it one of the best movies of 2024. Additionally, it has earned four nominations at the upcoming 82nd Golden Globes. Now, its digital release window has been announced.
According to Universal Pictures, viewers in the United States will be able to purchase or rent Wicked digitally starting December 31. Platforms include Fandango, Amazon Prime Video, Microsoft Movies & TV, Apple TV, and more.
In the United Kingdom, the film will be available to stream on Prime Video from January 3, 2025. Universal Pictures confirmed the release through the streamer’s listing page. Additionally, the movie’s physical release is also on the horizon.
What does this mean for the Indian audience?
Wicked could arrive in India in January 2025, likely on Prime Video. The movie’s early OTT release makes sense, as the box office is currently experiencing another epic clash between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King. Although this clash isn’t as impactful as “Barbenheimer” (Barbie and Oppenheimer) or “Glicked” (Gladiator II and Wicked) it has still managed to divert a substantial portion of box office revenue away from the Ariana Grande starrer.
Moreover, Wicked has grossed over $580 million globally against its $150 million budget, cementing its place as one of the highest-grossing movies of 2024. However, its impending digital release doesn’t mean the film will be pulled from theatres—far from it! The movie will continue to shine on the big screen during the ongoing festive season.
Wicked stars Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland, who transforms into Glinda the Good, and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. The cast also features remarkable talents such as Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. Stay tuned for more updates.
