It’s understandable why Bill Skarsgard is interested in playing the Joker in DCU’s planned Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold. His portrayal of Pennywise the Clown in the ‘It’ movies exhibited several traits similar to those of the Joker in DC Comics. Both iconic yet terrifying characters share characteristics like using fear and chaos to manipulate their victims, dark humour, and a flair for theatricality. They also lack morality, exploit the vulnerable, and are highly unpredictable in their identities.
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Skarsgard shared some fascinating and creative ideas about portraying the Joker in Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold. Interestingly, Muschietti also directed the ‘It’ movies, which featured Skarsgard as the terrifying and darkly humorous Pennywise.
When asked whether he would play the Joker in Muschietti’s next DCU project, Skarsgard responded:
“I don’t know, man. I think I have a really f***ing cool Joker in me, probably, somewhere. I think that’d be pretty sick.”
Skarsgard’s comments don’t confirm that he has officially been signed by DC Studios for The Brave and the Bold, but this could happen, as the actor has long been one of the fans’ top picks for the Joker. Additionally, it’s known that the upcoming Batman project has been delayed. This means both Skarsgard and Muschietti have plenty of time to discuss the idea of the former playing Gotham’s Clown Prince in the movie. Considering that Skarsgard has already collaborated with Muschietti, the door remains wide open for him to step into the Joker’s shoes and bring his own unique touch to the character.
Skarsgard is also receiving widespread acclaim for his portrayal of another iconic character, Count Orlok, in Robert Eggers’ remake of the gothic horror classic Nosferatu. With his growing reputation for playing dark, complex roles, it’s easy to imagine him taking on the Joker in the future. Who knows? Stay tuned for more updates.
