One of the co-creators of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, Bill Lawrence, has shared the latest update about the hit sports dramedy. The show’s finale premiered in May 2023 and reports about a potential Season 4 began circulating by the end of August that year. While Warner Bros. Television has not officially greenlit the new season, numerous media outlets have reported that a fourth season is very much on the cards. Lawrence’s latest comments further suggest that Season 4 is indeed happening.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lawrence revealed that he will not be as involved in Season 4 as he was in the previous three seasons. Instead, the leading man and co-creator, Jason Sudeikis, will take the reins of the creative direction for the upcoming season. Lawrence described the new installment as a “self-reboot” and did not deny that it was in the works.
“Jason’s the guy driving the wheel on that. But the one thing that he was always very clear about, without divulging anything, is that the story that we came up with for the first three seasons was “Ted Lasso” had a beginning, middle and end; without a doubt it had an end, you saw him jumping around and go home. It helped cement my thoughts and I don’t want to speak for him, but it’d be interesting to see that there’s always another story to tell with characters that people like, but it’s a different story. It’s almost a self-reboot.”
Many fans believe that a three-season arc for Ted Lasso is sufficient, given the satisfying conclusion of the last season. However, a significant portion of the show’s fanbase is eager to see more of the iconic AFC Richmond coach.
Ted’s story reached a fulfilling conclusion at the end of Season 3, with him returning to the U.S. to be with his family. According to Lawrence’s comments, we might see Lasso in an entirely different role in Season 4. Alternatively, the upcoming season could shift its focus away from the protagonist and instead explore the development of other characters. Some reports even suggest that Season 4 might feature a women’s football team, with Lasso taking a backseat rather than remaining the central figure of the show.
