Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has expressed her interest in playing Storm in Marvel Studios’ upcoming live-action X-Men reboot. Erivo has become a global sensation, thanks to her outstanding performance as Elphaba Thropp, who eventually transforms into the Wicked Witch of the West. Her chemistry with co-star Ariana Grande (playing Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good) has received widespread praise from audiences. Meanwhile, the film continues to perform well at the box office, grossing over $682 million globally to date.
In a recent interview with the National Board of Review, Erivo discussed her dream role. She shared that she would love to portray Storm in the forthcoming X-Men live-action movie, which is reportedly in its early stages of development. However, the project has not yet received an official green light from Marvel.
“I really want to play Storm. I know it sounds frivolous but I don’t think we’ve uncovered how grand she is and all of the inner turmoil that she has. So I think there’s a world in which we could do something like that.”
Apart from Erivo, Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is reportedly being considered for the role of Jean Grey in Marvel’s X-Men reboot. If this collaboration materialises, it would certainly be intriguing to see, especially given the significant age difference between the two actors—Sink is 22, while Erivo is 38. This casting choice, however, deviates from the comics, where the age gap between Storm and Jean Grey is not as pronounced.
Thanks to the fame and acclaim she has garnered from Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, Erivo positions herself as one of the top contenders for the role of Storm. Her powerful vocals and commanding on-screen presence could translate seamlessly into Storm’s regal and authoritatidemeanournor.
Moreover, Erivo has demonstrated her versatility as an actress, excelling in both dramatic and musical roles. This range would be crucial for portraying Storm’s complex character, who is both a fierce warrior and a compassionate leader. Erivo’s growing Hollywood success would significantly increase the buzz and anticipation surrounding the X-Men reboot. Stay tuned for more updates.
