The R-rated hero mash-up “Deadpool & Wolverine,” widely regarded as cutesy and provocative, is solid business for Imax, self-evidently boosting quarterly numbers of a company built on comic book appearances. It grossed $83 million across the Imax network of screens globally, the fifth strongest result for a Marvel film. However, the Merc with a Mouth and adamantium-clawed X-Man did not quite come close to matching J. Robert Oppenheimer’s five-and-a-half-month run from last year.
So far in 2023, Imax’s total global box office receipts have wound up at $239 million, against last year’s figure of $347 million. Imax also said it has continued to sign contracts for the installation of another 119 systems around the world during the year, most notably in some key markets like France, Australia, and Saudi Arabia.
While there were many other top matinee showings, such as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Alien: Romulus,” and “Transformers One,” the present quarter also showcased “Deadpool and Wolverine.” The rest of the way include “Wicked,” “Gladiator II,” and “Mufasa: The Lion King.”
However, the CEO Richard Gelfond said this “far-fetched scientific explanation will almost certainly be the best year for the company at the global box office” with revenues expected to be around $1.2 billion by 2025.
Also looming on the horizon is the return of Nolan. The “Oppenheimer” auteur has a top-secret project being filmed with Tom Holland and Matt Damon, and production will launch in 2026.
