Deadpool and Wolverine will be Marvel’s bet for the Oscars. The studio is ready to shoot for the moon with its newest billion-dollar entry. It is being reported that Ryan Reynolds will be pushed forward for the best actor nominations. Along with Hugh Jackman being pushed for the award for best supporting actor for the comedy and musical category.
Now, it is indeed a smart move for Disney. Both of them are one of the most bankable names, with a number of awards under their belt. But at the same time, quite hypocritical. It is known to everyone that Deadpool and Wolverine, even though being the most profitable project for Disney in a long time, had faced a lot of problems throughout its production.
As Ryan once said, “they were appalled at everything.” Alluding to the lack of support from the executives at Disney. It was Ryan and Shawn Levy’s determination that we got the movie that we saw make history as the highest grossing R-rated movie ever. If it had been in the hands of Disney, we might have had just another agenda-driven narrative, which would feel unoriginal and a complete injustice to the characters.
To say the least, studio interference is not something new. However, the fact that after the movie crosses a billion, suddenly the same studio starts the award campaign is quite uneasy to digest. Deadpool and Wolverine will soon have its digital release on October 1 and its DVD and Blu-ray on October 22.
