The year 2024 will be remembered as Disney’s comeback year. After enduring a string of significant box office disappointments—including Elemental, The Marvels, The Haunted Mansion, and Wish—the production house returned to its resounding form with Inside Out 2. Just when it seemed Disney might be heading toward disaster, Inside Out 2 arrived as a boon, pulling the conglomerate out of financial trouble. The sequel to the 2015 animated classic not only captured viewers’ hearts but also grossed nearly $1.7 billion globally. Following this success were Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3 billion) from Marvel Studios and Moana ($722.5 million+), the latter still performing strongly in theatres worldwide.
In addition to these hits, films such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($397 million) and Alien: Romulus ($351 million) from 20th Century Studios contributed to Disney reclaiming its dominance in 2024.
But Disney isn’t done yet. Mufasa: The Lion King is set to debut with an opening weekend exceeding $180 million, promising another major financial triumph for the studio. Additionally, Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold and starring the charismatic Timothée Chalamet, has received strong initial reactions. The upcoming Bob Dylan biopic is also expected to perform well at the box office. In other words, it’s safe to say Disney’s hands are firmly in the big pockets of money.
The year 2024 undeniably belongs to Disney, as it is the only studio to have surpassed $2 billion in global box office revenue this year. The last time the production house achieved this milestone was in 2022. Under Bob Chapek’s leadership, Disney experienced a surge in content production to meet the growing demand for streaming during the pandemic. Now, with Bob Iger at the helm, we are witnessing the culmination of those efforts. Let’s see how Disney performs in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
