Oh, dear Francis! What were you even thinking? Since its Cannes premiere, Coppola’s Megalopolis has been involved in many controversies. Now, it can add another controversy to the list. Despite receiving a highly polarising reception from critics, the veteran filmmaker has given Megalopolis a perfect grade on Letterboxd. Marking a dream project for Coppola, the self-funded sci-fi epic stars Adam Driver as Cesar Catilina, a highly skilled architect who aims to rebuild NYC as a utopia following a large-scale disaster.
Megalopolis received a highly divisive reaction from critics at its Cannes premiere. On Rotten Tomatoes, the controversial $120 million project stands with a “Rotten” 51% score. But it seems like Coppola doesn’t give a damn about the critics at all. He has given a five-star rating to his upcoming project on Letterboxd.
What should we think about this scenario? Is Coppola overconfident about his forthcoming flick, or is this just another hollow and pathetic attempt by the veteran and the marketing team to generate a strong buzz for the film? Whatever the case may be, all the controversies associated with the movie, including Coppola’s 5-star Letterboxd rating, have surely gotten people talking about the film.
Here’s what we think. Coppola self-funded Megalopolis as no other studio was ready to invest in it. The director somehow managed to convince Lionsgate to distribute the film. Moreover, the movie is expected to collect nearly $4-8 million in its opening weekend domestically, according to Box Office Pro. Giving his own project a perfect score on Letterboxd appears to be a blatant and desperate act of self-promotion by the veteran. Not only does this act undermine his credibility as a filmmaker and highlight his bias, but it also showcases his ignorance. This scenario could further damage the movie’s reputation.
Megalopolis is nearly a week away from its theatrical release, scheduled for September 27. Let’s see what luck has in store for Coppola’s upcoming flick. Stay tuned for more updates.
