The first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry is one of those rare premieres that lodges itself deep in your mind and refuses to leave. You are not going to forget this anytime soon. From the very first scene, it grips you by the throat, but you won’t look away. We are assuming that you must have seen the films, but there is a fundamental difference.
A film comes with a runtime of 2:30 Hours, and it has to keep everything moving. It can’t possibly replicate the eerie feeling that the book creates. But a show is different. It has the time to go beyond “merely moving the plot.” And that’s why IT: Welcome to Derry comes out so strong. This is not a slow build or a gentle return to Derry. It is a brutal plunge into fear.
The first episode wastes no time reminding you that Derry is cursed ground. It begins with a boy named Matty, trying to escape the town that everyone knows isn’t quite right. When a kind-looking family stops to offer him a ride, everything seems normal. Then, in an instant, it isn’t. The scene twists into something grotesque and unforgettable. A mutant baby, malformed and shrieking, pops up from the shadows. The camera cuts away, but the image of Matty’s pacifier flying out of the car window tells you everything you need to know. It’s one of those moments that sticks in your mind long after the screen fades to black.
Years later, Matty’s friends set out to find him. They’re kids with guilt, curiosity, and just enough bravery to make you hope they’ll survive. But this is Derry, and hope never lasts long. Inside the Capitol Theatre, their search turns into a nightmare. The mutant baby returns, crawling out of the movie screen and devouring nearly everyone in a frenzy of chaos and blood. Only two kids make it out alive, and by then, you’re left in stunned silence.
The creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, along with writer Jason Fuchs, don’t hold back. They take a familiar story and twist it until it feels new again. The horror is relentless, and the show makes one thing clear: nothing in Derry is sacred, and no one is safe.
You are not going to forget this episode anytime soon. It crawls under your skin, stays there, and whispers to you long after it’s over.
If you are a fan of horror then you are going to love this as it is not a usual jumpscare type of horror. It is way deeper and may hide beneath your skin for a long long time.
