James Mangold is one of those rare breeds of directors in Hollywood who have mastered almost all movie genres.
From cult cop drama Cop Land to the intense and compelling Girl, Interrupted (starring Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder), from Johnny Cash’s biopic Walk the Line (led by Joaquin Phoenix) to Hugh Jackman’s Logan, the filmmaker has seamlessly transitioned between genres, demonstrating a keen understanding of character-driven narratives and a knack for crafting visually appealing and emotionally resonant films.
Just when we began to think that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was Mangold’s biggest project ever, he took the reins of the new Star Wars movie, set during the Dawn of the Jedi era.
Mangold has made a name for himself in Hollywood for taking on challenging projects. But directing the upcoming Star Wars movie might be his biggest challenge ever, given the pressure from the passionate but unforgivable Star Wars fanbase.
In his recent interview with MovieWeb, Mangold disclosed his intentions of bringing “something original” to the forthcoming Star Wars film. This is what he said:
“The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies take place. It’s an area and a playground that I’ve always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager.
I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable, and you can’t please anybody.”
Mangold’s comments make sense, as Episode VII – The Force Awakens looked too derivative of Episode IV – A New Hope, whereas Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker was nothing but fan service, or should we say a feeble attempt from Disney and Lucasfilm to win back the pissed off fanbase who absolutely hated how Episode VIII – The Last Jedi turned out.
However, the Logan director has to be careful while trying to bring something original to his new Star Wars movie. Rian Johnson tried to do something similar but ended up facing a strong backlash from fans as some of his original ideas did not sit well with fans, such as Luke Skywalker’s pessimistic and grumpy characterisation.
On a deeper level, Mangold understands the essence of the Star Wars franchise. By describing it as a playground that has inspired him since his youth, he recognises the essence of Star Wars and its ability to inspire audiences of all ages.
As thrilling as Mangold’s comments sound regarding the essence of the galaxy far, far away, they also point out a concern. Star Wars has a deeply intricate and meticulously crafted lore.
Ignoring or dismissing this established canon could alienate longtime fans who value the continuity and internal consistency of the universe.
This scenario could also result in Mangold’s personal creative freedom getting the better of him, limiting his adherence to the established lore. This could very well trigger many fans. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
