So, what do you get when you take a critique on capitalism in a Gulag-like setting? Netflix brought us the answer during the pandemic in 2019 with its original movie “The Platform,” and now its sequel is set to release. The plot of the original movie revolved around a prison system with a vertical tower that distributes food via a platform free for all. The upper level would eat up everything, and the lower levels would find themselves starving. Thus one prisoner takes it upon himself to usher in change while facing the viciousness of the starved inmates.
The movie had a strong message, and it shows that it in fact received a lot of love. 56 million people watched the movie in the lockdown period. Netflix aims to replicate the success with this sequel, which brings the world of the platform back to us. The trailer has showcased a grittiness that feels familiar. The depiction of the prison system by Galder Gazelu-Urrutia looks imposing, leaving our main cast with a bleak future.
We have Hovik Keuchkerian, known for his work in “Money Heist,” and Milena Smit from “The Snow Girl” as the central characters. While the last movie incorporated comic actors in order to balance out the heavier topics like cannibalism, suicide, and violence, this time they might just go all in.
The movie is set to premiere on October 4, 2024, on Netflix after its world premiere, which was scheduled at the San Sebastian Film Festival in September.
