The Penguin by Lauren LeFranc is here, and its marketing is exactly what you would expect it to be. Gritty vintage and full of sweet, sweet worldbuilding. To endorse the series, a number of pages from an in-universe newspaper have been released under the title “Gotham Gazette.” The newspaper gives us many hints and Easter eggs as to what one may expect when diving into the series.
The cover shows Penguin himself, and with the title “The Penguin on Thin Ice,” the paper mentions how he is the next in line for the Falcone crime family. As we move through the pages, more Easter eggs are dropped. The second page tells the story about a district attorney and his argument about the unjust system. This is a clear reference to Harvey Dent, better known as Two Face.
It is unclear who is going to be cast as Dent, and therefore the illustration only has a generic sketch instead of any face. The paper explains how people are done with Gotham and how its mentality has changed ever since the riddler struck the city. The last two pages include news on Alberto Falcone as the new crime boss and a cartoon about Batman’s absence. Now we already know that The Batman is not going to appear, and it’s quite a cheeky way to play on the absence.
To say the least, the marketing for The Penguin looks absolutely insane. The Victorian newspaper in black, white, and red does justice to the grittiness of the series. Matt Reeves is surely setting an example of extensive worldbuilding.
