You-Know-Who has just named his successor. Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Lord Voldemort in Warner Bros.’ original Harry Potter film series, has expressed his desire for Academy Award-winning actor Cillian Murphy to take on the iconic antagonist in the upcoming HBO series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Fiennes, a strong contender for this year’s Best Actor Oscar for his sensational and gripping performance in Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, recently addressed the rumours surrounding Cillian Murphy’s potential casting as Voldemort. During an interview on Watch What Happens Live, the English actor was asked about the speculation regarding Murphy’s involvement in the forthcoming HBO series.
“Cillian is a fantastic actor,” Fiennes said of the Oppenheimer actor. “That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian. Yeah.”
Fiennes joined the iconic Harry Potter movie franchise with The Goblet of Fire (2005). He reprised his role in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), as well as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Part 2 (2011).
Cillian Murphy’s versatility is well-known. In fact, audiences recently witnessed his incredible range in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Murphy has also demonstrated his acting prowess in projects like Peaky Blinders and Dunkirk. His ability to seamlessly shift from calm and collected to menacing and terrifying makes him a strong candidate for a character as multifaceted and darkly complex as Voldemort.
Murphy’s cold, piercing stare and restrained intensity can captivate audiences—qualities that align perfectly with Voldemort’s persona. These traits helped the Dark Lord command the Death Eaters through a combination of fear and loyalty for so many years.
The casting for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has not yet been announced. However, its release window is set for 2026. Stay tuned for more updates.
