Gladiator 2 has not yet hit theatres, but director Ridley Scott has already started working on Gladiator 3. The upcoming sequel focuses on Paul Mescal’s Lucius, who seeks revenge against General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal). Under Acacius’ leadership, the Roman army invaded Numidia and brutally killed Lucius’ wife and child. Taking inspiration from his legendary father, Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the original 2000 film), he looks to fight as a gladiator under the tutelage of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), who seeks to overthrow Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) to seize control of the Roman Empire.
In his recent interview with Total Film, Scott discloses that he has written eight pages of Gladiator 3.
“I’ve already got eight pages. I’ve got the beginning of a very good footprint. If there’s a Gladiator 3, I don’t think you’d ever go back into the arena. But I had to go back into the arena…”
Scott’s latest update about Gladiator 3 is exciting news for fans. However, much will depend on how Gladiator 2 performs at the box office. The sequel’s box office performance will determine whether fans will see a third installment in the future.
Gladiator 2 has all the hype in the world with it. However, its $250-310 million budget poses a significant challenge for Scott. With such a massive budget, the sequel will need to earn at least $625-650 million globally to break even.
Gladiator 2 faces direct competition from Universal’s Wicked: Part One (starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo). Disney’s Moana 2 and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will arrive in theatres just five days after the Paul Mescal-starrer’s release on November 22, adding to the challenges for the sequel. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
Gladiator 2 will be released in India a week before its US release, November 15.
