Paramount played their cards tight when it shifted its plans to release Smile in theaters instead of just Paramount+. The studio recognized the potential in the indie horror genre, and the decision has paid them off quite well, shooting off a franchise on its own. To think that a couple years ago, Smile was merely a short titled “Laura Hasn’t Slept” is quite wild. However, after the sequel has surfaced in the theaters, the talks of a Smile spin-off are going around.
The indie horror movie has made a separate fanbase, which is growing day by day. While the first movie followed a therapist in the psychiatric ward, the second movie has British actress and singer Naomi Scott play the role of Skye Riley. The potential of the franchise seems to be a well that Paramount has tapped quite well, as the director Parker Finn has proposed the possibility of a spin-off.
Parker revealed his plans and thought train in a recent interview. The director mentioned that he is all down to make a spin off, given that the smile entity still remains largely unexplored. Something similar to the case of A Quiet Place seems to be afoot, as that too started off as a low-budget horror movie and has now become a horror icon in its own right. “I think there are a lot of interesting directions and roads that Smile could go down,” says Finn when asked about the possibility.
What could be the spin-off? Will the mythology of the smile entity finally get explored? As of now, the director is content with the sequel’s performance; in his words, “You know, we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.”
