We are less than a week away from the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theatres. However, discussions about a fourth installment in the franchise are already underway. Thanks to Jim Carrey, who plays the on-screen Dr. Robotnik, we now have more clarity about the possibility of Sonic 4.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Carrey addressed the potential for Sonic 4. Following two successful films, the iconic Sega speedster is set to face one of his most formidable foes, Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves), in the highly anticipated third movie.
Carrey did not confirm Sonic 4 but expressed his enthusiasm about the potential fourth installment. He said he would consider reprising the role of Robotnik if the story felt right. It depends on how the plot develops Robotnik’s character. Here’s what he said:
“I don’t want to say for sure, but it always comes down to what’s happening in the moment. And the guys, Toby Asher and Jeff Fowler, call me up and say, “We have this idea. What do you think? In where we can take Robotnik.” So it really comes down to that. I’m not against it, for sure.”
What stands out most from Carrey’s comments is that he isn’t opposed to returning as Robotnik in Sonic 4, which is a promising sign. Considering the strong performance of the first two films and the promising early box office projections for the third, the idea of Sonic 4 doesn’t seem far-fetched. The original Sonic movie (2020) grossed over $320 million, while its sequel (2022) earned more than $405 million.
Most importantly, audiences love the Sonic movie franchise. This is reflected in the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes for Sonic 2, which stands at an impressive 96%, despite a more modest critical score of 69% (based on 180 reviews).
Furthermore, the first reactions to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are extremely positive, with special praise directed at Carrey’s and Reeves’ performances. Whether Sonic 4 gets the green light from Paramount remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more updates.
