We are gradually approaching Netflix’s Squid Game Season 2, but it seems the franchise may be expanding in a big way. According to Deadline, a new English-language spinoff series is in the works, with veteran filmmaker David Fincher attached to develop the project. However, it’s still unclear whether the project will be a spinoff or an English-language adaptation of the original series.
Whichever direction the project takes, it would mark the first major expansion of the Squid Game franchise since the original series, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, debuted in 2021.
Speculation about Fincher’s next project is already circulating on social media, but this Squid Game spinoff rumour appears to be the most noteworthy. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Netflix, but if confirmed, the acclaimed filmmaker may dedicate 2025 to developing the show.
The original series centers on a secret competition in which 456 financially desperate participants risk their lives by playing a series of deadly children’s games for a chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize. It earned critical acclaim and shattered multiple streaming records, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series in 94 countries, with over 142 million member households tuning in and surpassing 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks.
Production for Squid Game Season 2 began in July 2023, and it is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
