Netflix’s Stranger Things fanbase is desperate to get their hands on Season 5. Adding to the excitement, one of the series’ leading stars, Gaten Matarazzo, has teased that the final season will be the “biggest, darkest, and scariest” compared to previous seasons. Filming for Season 5 commenced in January this year.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matarazzo talked in-depth about the upcoming season. When asked about whether the fifth season would be “biggest, darkest, and scariest” ever, this is what the on-screen Dustin replied:
“I think that’s the goal. That’s certainly the intention behind writing it. The one consistency of this show is that it just grows every year in scale and size and in the message that they want to bring. So this season is not different in the slightest, and I knew that they had prepped that, initially. They said, “Hey, this one is going to be really, really big. We’re not going to candy-coat it: it’s a full-year shoot.” And that led to a big reaction of, like, “Oh, so we’re really going for it.” So we have been [going for it] and we still are. I’m excited for people to see it.”
Matarazzo’s recent comments assure us that The Duffer Brothers have turned up the tone of Season 5 a notch, aiming to make the final chapter bigger, grander, and more memorable than previous seasons.
Matarazzo has also confirmed that the final season will undergo nearly a year-long production schedule. This shows how serious The Duffer Brothers are about Season 5. Not only are they seeking to provide a fitting conclusion to the show, but this also suggests that the upcoming episodes may match the runtime of Season 4’s episodes.
Season 4 was also a critical hit, though its reception dipped slightly compared to the first three seasons. Currently, the fourth season holds a ‘fresh’ 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an 89% audience score. The long runtimes in the previous season’s episodes divided some critics, who felt that this ended up hurting Season 4’s storyline instead of strengthening it.
If Stranger Things Season 5 turns out darker and scarier than previous entries, it would be a big win for the audience. The Duffer Brothers could enhance the final season’s scary elements through Vecna, making his killings scarier and more gruesome than ever. Let’s see what happens.
