The current iteration of Bond films before starring Daniel Craig includes three movies, two of which were directed by Sam Mendes. Both of which were highly appreciated by the fans of the franchise. “Skyfall” and “Spectre” were quality additions to the franchise, which makes us wonder, Why hasn’t there been another R-Band film by Mendes? Mendes himself has showcased a lack of interest in making another Bond film, and the reason is quite understandable.
The director has blatantly mentioned in a recent interview regarding his recent venture “The Franchise” that the studio behind the Bond movies prefers directors who are much younger and therefore “controllable.” It makes one wonder what kind of studio intervention there must have been with the other Bond movies.
The director didn’t deny his return, stating “never say never,” but he adds that it is more likely he won’t. Mendes mentions that the studio wants “slightly more malleable people who are earlier in their career.” To be a part of a franchise like James Bond is a huge deal for a young director, which makes it more likely that such a director will be more friendly towards the studio input.
Pinewood Studios, which handles the Bond movies, are not the only ones who are guilty of deviating from the visions of the directors working under them. the practice of studio intervention is rampant in hollyowood.
Under Mendes, the Bond movies reached a new peak, with Skyfall being the highest grossing Bond movie till date. Earning $1.1 billion worldwide along with 5 Oscars. As of now, the new Bond movie is yet to find a face to play the British spy, nor does it have a director attached to it.
