The stakes are higher than ever for Eric Kripke’s The Boys Season 5. Given how Season 4 ended, and how Kripke has butchered fan theories of Black Noir being a clone of Homelander, we should expect anything, and we mean anything, from the upcoming fifth season.
At a recent FAN EXPO panel, our very own Karl Urban, aka Billy Butcher, dropped a chilling tease about the final season of the hit Prime Video superhero satire, confirming that the series will waste no time in executing its long-promised apocalyptic ending.
Urban wasted no time in teasing that our favourite characters are not safe in the final season, and that the emotional devastation will begin right from the very first episode. The actor also suggested that the stakes in Season 5 are pushed past the breaking point.
“I think we throw you in the deep end, but in a good way, because the stakes are as high as they can possibly be,” Urban explained.
The Boys has a history of brutal deaths, and the star promised that Season 5 will set a new standard for early carnage.
“I think the real thing to look out for in Season 5 on an emotional level, as far as the characters go and your attachments to characters, is that there are going to be some big hits early on in the very first episode.” He concluded by adding, “That’s probably what is going to make you realise, ‘Oh, this s–t is for real.’ The stakes couldn’t be higher, and anybody’s fair game.”
So the question that naturally arises here is this: which characters are going to meet their demise in Season 5?
Most fan theories agree that the deaths of Billy Butcher and Homelander are inevitable, mirroring the show’s dark comic-book roots. Butcher’s terminal illness from Compound V use has been a major focus, and many speculate his final act will be a self-sacrifice, perhaps by deploying the Supe-killing virus he has been developing.
In addition, many fans strongly believe that the heart of The Boys, MM, will be targeted. Moreover, Frenchie and Kimiko are not safe either. They often find themselves on the front lines, and losing any of this trio would instantly devastate the team and the audience.
Ashley, who took Compound V in a desperate bid to survive, or The Deep, who has repeatedly failed Homelander, could be slaughtered early on to send a message about Homelander’s newly absolute power.
The final season will feature a major crossover with the spin-off series Gen V, with Starlight and A-Train recruiting supe students like Marie Moreau to their resistance. Introducing and then immediately sacrificing a major character from the spin-off would be a truly brutal way to solidify the stakes for the final battle.
Amid the promises of high shock value, unforeseen twists, and brutal deaths, Urban has also teased a grand ‘Supernatural’ reunion in the finale. Eric Kripke has confirmed that Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy), Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins will all appear “in the same frame together, and in the same storyline, and interacting with each other.”
While the nature of Padalecki and Collins’ roles is still under wraps (likely grotesque and evil supes, in true Boys fashion), the confirmation of the three stars sharing the screen is a rare, heartwarming moment that could also serve as a much-needed nostalgic counterbalance to the expected bleak and blood-soaked culmination of The Boys.
