The Boys Season 5 Episode 5, titled “One Shots”, has landed on Prime Video, and it delivers what might be the most nostalgic and “meta” hour of television for anyone who grew up watching 2000s cult classics. We all know how the show proudly embraces its satirical and gory tone, but this particular episode feels like a massive, bloody gift to two fandoms: fans of the Seth Rogen-produced and -led comedy era and the Supernatural family.
The first big highlight of Episode 5 is undoubtedly the long-awaited Supernatural reunion. Thanks to Eric Kripke, we get to see the Winchester brothers reunite with their angelic sidekick. We have Jared Padalecki as Mister Marathon and Misha Collins as Malchemical.
Seeing them share the screen with Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy is a dream come true for fans, though in true The Boys fashion, it isn’t a happy family gathering. Between Mister Marathon’s sleazy, coke-fuelled attitude and a brutal confrontation that leaves the room painted red, it’s a dark twist on the brotherhood we loved for fifteen years.
Adding to the madness is a heavy dose of Rogen-style humour. In a scene that feels straight out of This Is the End, a group of Hollywood stars appears as fictionalised, panicked versions of themselves. Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson share a card game with Kumail Nanjiani and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (fondly remembered as McLovin from Superbad).
The dialogue is packed with references to their real-life careers, including hilarious nods to Michael Cera and the fate of other famous actors in this twisted universe.
The episode doesn’t just lean on cameos, it uses them to heighten the stakes. As Homelander continues his descent into absolute tyranny, seeing these “real-world” celebrities caught in his path makes the danger feel more personal and grounded. It’s a perfect blend of high-tension drama and the kind of raunchy, improvised-feeling comedy that Rogen and his crew pioneered.
And how can we forget the cute little Terror, Billy Butcher’s dog? After watching Episode 5, it’s safe to say that Terror is the only living being on planet Earth that loves Homelander “unconditionally.” All he wants is… well, we probably shouldn’t discuss that here! If you know, you know.
