CChristopher Nolan, is recognized by all as one of the best directors and writers the world has ever produced. He has given some of the best films of the century like Inception, Dunkirk and the latest Oppenheimer. But long ago, the first film he directed, was as ambitious as brilliant, but has often been neglected.
Following (1998) is a film that Nolan had written and directed, as well as produced, even before entering into the world of cinema. The film was made with a mere budget of $6000. It was described as a neo-noir crime-thriller. The film starred Jeremy Theobald, Alex Haw, Lucy Russell and John Nolan in prominent roles. Almost all the technical work was managed by Nolan himself like editing, writing, cinematography etc. with some help from others.
The film follows the life of a young writer who follows strangers around the streets of London to observe them and draw inspiration for his novel. But this habit of his takes him deep into the criminal underworld of the city when he fails to keep distance. What follows is his struggle in escaping that life and coming back to his normal routine. Will he succeed in his endeavour? That is something you will have to find out after watching the film.
The film shows the origin of Nolan’s genius. More than the film, Nolan’s ability to make a masterpiece amazes us. He made a full-fledged feature film out of $6000 and made $126000 of it. The film was well appreciated for its technicalities and interplay of this neo-noir plot. The film made a name for Nolan in the film industry and two years later he came up with his next directorial- Memento.
Following is available on Amazon Prime Video and MUBI. It is a film that you can watch if you are a Nolan fan. The film shows how talented the filmmaker actually is to create a masterpiece out of nothing.
