DreamWorks Animation’s latest sensation, The Wild Robot, is on a mission to melt viewers’ hearts globally. The critical reactions to Chris Sanders’ latest directorial effort have been supremely positive, with many critics declaring the animated project the best DreamWorks film of all time. According to Deadline, the movie may earn between $20-40 million in its opening weekend. However, this figure may rise due to its overwhelmingly positive reception among critics. Additionally, many have chosen The Wild Robot over Disney’s record-shattering Inside Out 2 as the top contender for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at next year’s Academy Awards, scheduled to take place on March 3, 2025.
According to many publications, The Wild Robot is not only the best-animated movie of 2024 but also one of the greatest animated features of all time. Critics have singled out the movie’s ability to effortlessly shift into a heartwarming emotional rollercoaster after entertaining the audience with belly-aching humor in its first half. Despite its straightforward narrative, the film strikes all the right chords. Currently, it holds a ‘fresh’ critic score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 55 certified reviews, while Inside Out 2 sits at 90%. Although The Wild Robot’s score may drop in the coming days, it is unlikely to fall below 90%.
However, it’s not entirely fair to evaluate or compare these two films solely based on their Rotten Tomatoes scores. Why not take other factors into account?
The Wild Robot benefits from a strong, fresh storyline, outstanding voice performances, and top-notch visuals. In fact, it is a visual masterpiece. Moreover, the Academy doesn’t tend to favor sequels. On the other hand, Inside Out 2 was great but definitely not as good as the 2015 original. Furthermore, animated masterpieces like Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron are proof that the Academy has begun recognizing more unique and artistic animated films. This scenario naturally gives DreamWorks’ latest project a noticeable advantage over Pixar’s newest offering.
The Wild Robot is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 27. It features voices from talents like Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, and Ving Rhames. Stay tuned for more updates.
