The last few decades have seen video games transition from a simple mind-numbing activity to an untapped medium of storytelling. Thus, we see the market being full of new RPG titles every year. And following those titles, the opportunity for these stories to seep into other media increases manifolds. No wonder there have been so many movies and TV shows based on video games.
It is being speculated that in 2025 we can have a Sims movie. After its confirmation by EA, the load of bringing this movie to life will be in the hands of Amazon MGM Studios. This will be the latest addition to a long list of games that have gotten their own movie.
It’s a rather symbiotic relationship between the two industries. The games get more publicity in the non-gaming section of the audience, and the movie studios are able to penetrate the gaming audience. There is absolutely no need to build up characters and introduce the audience to the lore, as the fanbase is already well established.
The drawback is that more often than not, the movies take the audience way too lightly. Making questionable changes to the lore leads to outrage from the fans of the franchise. A delicate balance is thus necessary. And to say that “cramming hours of gameplay and experience in a two-hour movie is tough,” there are enough projects like Witcher: Blood Origin, Resident Evil 2022, or the Halo series to prove you how even a whole season falls short for doing justice.
The fandom is the simplest to crack; however, studios don’t really seem to get it. They tend to have too much liberty when it comes to the key aspects; and lets not even talk about the abominable sheep in the upcoming MINECRAFT movie and the original design for Sonic the Hedgehog. It is to be seen what more this collaborative “trend” holds in its future when the projects continue to get ridiculed.
