Warner Bros. Discovery has secured a deal with Google Cloud to leverage the latter’s Vertex AI to create captions for its content platforms. The conglomerate reportedly entered this partnership to reduce its time and cost on manual labour while improving the accuracy of captions for US viewers.
Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform will be used first for the conglomerate’s unscripted programming, which should include creating attractive captions for reality TV and sports content associated with Discovery+, CNN, and Max.
WBD has claimed that the platform can reduce captioning costs by up to 50% and the time taken for developing captions by up to 80%. However, there will be a team consisting of human employees to oversee the quality of captions.
This step comes from WBD’s ongoing efforts to train and upgrade Caption AI’s workflow to save money and boost its profit margins. The company has been trying to strengthen its revenue and profits by aggressively cutting costs following the merger between Discovery and WarnerMedia.
WBD executives have not yet confirmed if they intend to use Vertex AI for scripted programming in the future. If they do, it could lead to further job cuts at the company. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
