Child prodigy or not, young adolescence is a tough time for all teens. But obviously, even more so for those who have particularly been blessed with over-the-top gifts like high IQs and a talent for one of the arts. A film that is based upon this very theme is ‘Gifted’.
The 2017 Marc Webb directorial stars Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer in leading roles. The plot follows an intellectually gifted seven-year-old Mary Adler who soon becomes the subject of an intense custody battle between her maternal uncle / de facto guardian Frank Adler and maternal grandmother.
While her grandmother wants Mary to be put under rigorous tuition to hone her exceptional mathematical acumen, Frank is hellbent on her having a normal childhood. Not only did the movie garner positive acclaim, Evans and Grace were also lauded for their raw performances.
Although the plot of the film becomes quite predictable towards the end, it makes for a quintessential coming-of-age must-watch. This is primarily because it reminds us of the importance of taking life one stage at a time, no matter how prepared you think you are for the next one.
If this sounds like something that’d make for a good weekend watch, head on over, either to Netflix or Prime Video to stream and rent ‘Gifted’, respectively, now!
