The first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman is out now, and the majority of the DC fanbase has embraced David Corenswet as their new Man of Steel. However, there will always be a portion of the fanbase still loyal to Henry Cavill. Guys, Cavill has moved on, and so have Warner Bros. and James Gunn. It’s time we move on too! Corenswet looks fantastic as both Clark Kent and his super-powered Kryptonian alter ego. The trailer also teased other notable characters, including Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and more. However, one character caught many people off guard: Metamorpho, played by Anthony Carrigan (Gotham and Barry).
Metamorpho, also known as Rex Mason, made his comic book debut in The Brave and the Bold #57, created by Bob Haney and artist Ramona Fradon in 1965. He is one of the few DC characters who accidentally gained their powers. The character possesses the extraordinary ability to transform his body into any element he chooses. This power, granted to him by an ancient Egyptian artefact known as the Orb of Ra, makes him one of the most versatile and fascinating figures in the DC universe.
Mason’s life took a dramatic turn when he was hired by industrialist Simon Stagg to retrieve the Orb of Ra. During his mission, an accident involving the Orb granted him the ability to alter his physical form at will. However, this transformation, while endowing him with incredible power, left him trapped in a perpetually shifting elemental state.
Metamorpho has been a part of several prominent superhero factions, including the Outsiders and the Justice League. However, the latest Superman trailer doesn’t clarify whether the character is a hero or a villain. While he is most often depicted fighting evil, his actions are driven by a strong sense of morality and his care for loved ones.
Gunn’s decision to include Metamorpho hints at his efforts to establish a broader DCU. Metamorpho’s role in Superman promises to enrich the story, whether he appears as an ally, a reluctant hero, or a conflicted figure, leaving a significant mark on the DC cinematic universe. Stay tuned for more updates.
