Movies are as subjective as human choices get. So much so that on one hand, a film can be appreciated worldwide, but might not appeal to audiences in a particular region. On the other hand, the inverse is also true. That being said, the question that arises is: will ‘Wicked’ suffer a similar fate, especially in India.
The upcoming Ariana Grande – Cynthi Erivo led fantastical musical, slated to release theatrically in the country on November 22 has left audiences divided elsewhere. In the countries that the film has already been released, viewers have majorly two, yet wildly contrasting views.
Audiences either love the film, or they do not quite like or understand the point of it. The latter could very well prove to be the case with Indian audiences. Considering the box-office blunder that was ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, the most recent musical that debuted theatrically, only captivating plot and gripping performances can save ‘Wicked’.
Moreover, another thing that could very well prove to work against the musical is that it majorly appeals to the younger demographic. Not only does this limit the viewer base, it also hinders the growth of the film in the country. However, despite all of the aforementioned facts, the film could shine at the box-office, taking into account the general lack of anticipated titles debuting alongside.
