‘Girls Will Be Girls’ has had a long journey and it’s still an ongoing one. Slowly and steadily the film has crossed milestones that many other budding films and filmmaker’s dream of. Marking the debut production venture of real life couple and talented actors Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal through their Pushing Buttons Studios, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves.
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ was first presented by Chadha and director Shuchi Talati at the 2018 Film Bazaar in Goa, organized by India’s National Film Development Corporation. From there it was joined by India’s Crawling Angel Films (2020 Berlinale selection ‘The Shepherdess and the Seven Songs’) and France’s Dolce Vita Films (2019 Venice and Cairo winner ‘A Son’).
The journey has been incredible since start when ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ was the only Indian script to be selected in the prestigious Berlinale Script Station 2021. The feat was extraordinary as Berlinale Talents Script Station is a lab that chooses only 10 projects each year from around the world under its program. Moreover, the it was also selected at the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel Film Lab, and won a New York State Council of the Arts Grant for development.
Having been in making for quite some time, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ finally had its world premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to be part various other international film festivals that include Gothenburg Film Festival, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Atlantic International Film Festival and now it has been invited to the 29th Busan International Film Festival.
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ marks the directorial debut of Shuchi Talati, who has also written the film. She is a New York based AFI graduate whose previous credit includes ‘A Period Piece’ (a SXSW 2020 selection), among various other short films.
The film is set in an elite boarding school in a small Himalayan hill town in northern India and follows the story of a 16-year-old girl, whose rebellious coming-of-age is hijacked by her mother who never got to come-of-age.
‘Girls Will Be Girls’ stars Preeti Panigrahi in the lead role. She won the Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival 2024 for her performance as Mira, a teenager navigating the complexities of adolescence and societal expectations. The film also stars Kesav Binoy Kiran and Kani Kusruti who is basking in the glory of her most recent outing ‘All We Imagine As Light’.
