In the world of stand-up comedy, there might be some stories or sets that are exaggerated by the performers to get laughter. Some of these stories might be too sensitive to get a laugh and might get them into trouble. This was certainly the case with Hasan Minhaj when he was accused of spreading false and untrue stories regarding his Netflix special stand-up.
With three Netflix specials to his credit, comedian Hasan Minhaj has enjoyed a prosperous career. However, following a harsh phase in September 2023, his comedy was called into question.
Several of the more intimate stories in the comedian’s stand-ups, such as those about racist experiences he had as an Asian American and Muslim American and a traumatic event in which a bag of white powder he received in the mail unintentionally spilled over his daughter’s face, were allegedly made up or exaggerated.
More than 20 people were interviewed for the story, which was published in The New Yorker, according to a statement from the publisher. Minhaj, however, denied their allegations, saying that the charges made in the article were misunderstood. Although his stand-up stories are dramatized, he acknowledged that they are based on his own experiences.
After months of controversy, Minhaj is back with his new Netflix special “Off With His Head”. Hasan discussed the fact-checked humor controversy that resulted in his termination as the new host of The Daily Show in his most recent Netflix special.
“I have to be factually accurate. Because — I don’t know if you saw this last year — The New Yorker fact-checked my standup comedy,” Minhaj stated in his latest stand-up set. While he received a lot of criticism for his set in 2023, it was a nice way to tackle those allegations. Fans have liked his recent reference and continue to enjoy the special on Netflix. Whether The New Yorker team will respond to him or not is anyone’s guess.
