Oscar shortlisted live action short film ‘Anuja’ has found a home on Netflix as the streamer acquires the streaming right for this Adam J. Graves directorial.
‘Anuja’ is a coming-of-age story that talks about the internal battle between sisterhood and Child Labour. As per the official longline, “When a precocious nine-year-old girl who works in a back-alley garment factory is offered a rare chance to attend boarding school, she faces a choice that will determine the fate of her future and her family.”
Ever since ‘Laapataa Ladies’ got out of the Oscar race, all hopes are now pinned on ‘Anuja’ to bring home the Academy Award. The expectations have increased even more after it won the Best Live Action Short at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival earlier.
Anuja’ is a result of thorough research and was filmed with the help of several community partners including Salaam Baalak Trust, Shine Global, NGOs like the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation and Save the Children.
Moreover, Sajda Pathaan who plays the lead role is a resident of this trust’s center that provides a home for girls formerly living on the streets of Delhi. The short film also stars Ananya Shanbhag and Nagesh Bhosle.
With this latest Netflix acquisition, ‘Anuja’s position in the Oscar race is strengthened even more given the global recognition this provides to the short film. It serves as the apt platform for the film and helps bring it into the notice of those who probably wouldn’t have heard of it before. And this is exactly the kind of promotion and exposure one would need while fighting for one for the most prestigious top spots in the world.
‘Anuja’ has some high profile backers like Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Mindy Kaling. The short film is jointly produced by Graves Films, Shine Global Inc, Krushan Naik Films and Salaam Baalak Trust.
