The winners for The 76th Primetime Emmys have now been revealed for the 2023-24 TV season. This year we got two Emmy award ceremonies, one earlier in January for the year 2022-23 and then the latest one for the year 2023-24. This was because the 75th Annual Primetime Emmys ceremony got delayed due to the WGA and SAG strikes last year.
Coming to the winners for this year, the most notable one has to be FX’s ‘Shōgun’. The historical drama set in feudal Japan set a new all time record for a single season of TV by grabbing 18 wins. 14 out of this were for the 2024 creative Emmy awards and 4 for the Primetime Emmys. ‘Shōgun’ also became the first majority non-English show in Emmys history to win the Outstanding Drama Series award.
After ‘Squid Game’ (2022), ‘Shōgun’ was second of its kind (of Asian origin) to receive nomination at the Emmys. Among other major grabs, Shōgun’s lead actor and actress Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, respectively became the first Japanese stars to win in the leading acting categories for drama series.
If it was for ‘Shōgun’ in the drama category, it was once again FX that won the most awards in the comedy series category. Breaking its record of winning the most awards for a comedy series in a single season, ‘The Bear’ took home 11 Emmys this season, including lead actor for Jeremy Allen White, supporting actor for Ebon-Moss Bachrach and supporting actress for Liza Colón-Zayas (who became the first Latina to win this awards).
Despite ‘The Bear’ dominating the Comedy Series category, it was Max Original series ‘Hacks’ to win the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Jean Smart took home Emmy for the sixth time as she won the award for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Moving to the next major category of limited or anthology series, Netflix’s ’Baby Reindeer’ got 4 wins: Outstanding Limited Series, Writing for a Limited Series, Lead Actor for a Limited Series (Richard Gadd) and supporting actress in a Limited Series (Jessica Gunning).
As for the total number of wins, FX comes at the top with 36 Emmys followed by Netflix with 24 and HBO and max is at number 3 with 14 wins. With 10 Emmys, Apple TV+ is in the fourth position and then came ABC, Disney+, Hulu and NBC with 7 each. CBS got 5 and Amazon and Peacock each received 4 and 3 Emmys respectively.
