Based on a play by Madhuri Shekar and written by Eric Randall, Roshan Sethi directorial ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ follows the story of a gay couple where an eligible Indian bachelor finds a partner in a white man.
But the twist is that this white man is the nice Indian boy that the film’s title talks about. Wonder why? Well, Jay, played by Jonathan Groff (‘Mindhunter’) shares the same cultural roots as Naveen (Karan Soni) since he was adopted by Indian parents. He not only enjoys Bollywood films, is charming, polite and respectful but also has a tattoo of Lord Ganesh on his shoulder.
‘A Nice Indian Boy’ had it’s world premiere at SXSW earlier this year in March and stars Karan Soni, Jonathan Groff, Zarna Garg, Sunita Mani, Harish Patel, Peter S. Kim and Sas Goldberg.
As per the official logline, “When Naveen brings his fiancé me to meet his traditional Indian family, they must contend with accepting his white-orphan-artist boyfriend and helping them plan the Indian wedding of their dreams.”
With humour and heart, the film explores the complexities of love, family, masculinity, cultural expectations and identity, acceptance and discovering one’s true path.
The film has since been part of multiple film festivals and has received various accolades as well. ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ debuted with 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been praised for being “a riotous, moving queer romantic comedy with a wildly unique premise”. There is great anticipations for the film’s OTT release which will hopefully happen soon. Stay tuned to binged.com for further updates!
