Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar, the creative minds behind critically and commercially successful films like ‘The Sky Is Pink’ and ‘Magarita With A Straw’ are presenting their next venture together, ‘A Fly On The Wall’ at the Busan International Film Festival this year.
Making a world premiere in the Wide Angle Documentary Competition at BIFF, ‘A Fly On The Wall’ is a documentary film that follows the story of Chika Kapadia who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and given four months to live, and how he decides to end his life.
As per the official synopsis, “He applies to Dignitas, an organization providing physician-assisted suicide in Zurich, Switzerland, and begins keeping a journal as a sort of religious ritual as he prepares his move there. He asks his close friend, director Shonali Bose, to film his final moments. This is where the film begins. Contrary to what one might expect, Chika’s last two weeks with Shonali are filled with moments of pure joy. They drink beer with friends, take walks with their favorite ice cream in hand, and constantly express how much they love each other—an unbelievably beautiful time. Honoring her friend’s choice with dignity and grace, Shonali Bose celebrates life instead of mourning death.”
In the teaser unveiled today Shonali is talking into the camera and in a very real, raw and unfiltered way she expresses how she feels about this decision of her friend and how it difficult it is to see someone you love go from the world like that.
Highlighting the film’s broader message Shonali says, “Ultimately, for me it is also about removing the fear around death and viewing it as a part of life – something that can be peaceful and dignified. We want viewers to reflect on these issues and consider the humanity behind them.”
The 29th Busan International Film Festival takes place from October 2-11, 2024.
