So, why would a thriller show copy a romantic show? Good question.
During a recent interview, it was confirmed that David Fincher is working on an American version of Squid Game. Considering its popularity, it’s a smart, profitable step. With Fincher’s reputation, the project already carries significant weight.
But more often than not, these expansions hurt the original’s credibility, with only a few exceptions. One of the best examples is Modern Love.
The show originated in the US and quickly became a go-to choice for date nights or relaxing Sunday afternoons.
The best part?
The show expanded into successful franchises.
For the Indian market alone, it introduced Modern Love Mumbai, Modern Love Chennai, and Modern Love Hyderabad, each capturing the essence of its respective region. On an international scale, franchises like Modern Love Tokyo further demonstrated the format’s adaptability.
If Squid Game wants to capture a global audience from a regional perspective, it could benefit from studying Modern Love. Although Modern Love had an easier run as an anthology, it perfected its content and localized storytelling.
To achieve the same success, Squid Game needs to master these aspects while staying true to its original tone and intensity.
