The Golden Globes 2025 has taken place. While the award show is considered among the most respected and sought-after awards, it does funny things.
How?
All We Imagine As Light lost to the Spanish drama Emilia Perez (France) in the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture. The other nominees were I’m Still Here, The Girl with the Needle, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Vermiglio.
Payal Kapadia was also contesting for the Best Director category, but there also she didn’t have any luck.
She competed with Jacques Audiard for Emilia Perez, Sean Baker for Anora, Edward Berger for Conclave, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance. Brady Corbet won the award for The Brutalist.
We can consider the Best Director award because Brady Corbet indeed did a phenomenal job, but snubbing “All We Imagine As Light” for something like Emilia Perez is not making any sense.
There are so many nuances inside the Payal Kapadia gem that is nowhere to be found in Emilia Perez (although a good film per se).
But, as we have always said, any international or national-level award shouldn’t be the measure of our judgment of a film. Awards are known to be biased and problematic. It is best to judge a film from our own perspective.
All We Imagine As Light will remain a great film.
