Pepe, directed by Shreelesh S Nair, is an action thriller that landed on Prime Video on October 11, yet many fans might not even know it has made its way there. Released in theatres in August, the film centers around the struggle between an oppressed village and a domineering upper-caste group, tackling the weighty themes of dignity and resource access.
Though it boasts intense action sequences, the digital release of Pepe hardly made any waves about it. As OTT platforms cut back on their marketing budgets, there’s even less help for a release like that of Pepe as it floats about in the congested sea of streaming offerings.
Pepe is an interesting film for Kannada cinema viewers having stylish action background music with emotional portrayals, not many could get to view it.
Other than inaccessibility, on the larger scale of the movie, Pepe is complex. The movies keep changing their storyline and info-bursting what ensures a hoversome ride for the viewer. Just when you are getting sucked into one scene, you are already being moved onto the next. Some fans might take this for confusing and tiring, that again cuts the possibility of any word-of-mouth always critical for survival on OTT in today’s moribund marketing environment.
Reactions have been mixed since the trailer dropped. The buzz around Vinay Rajkumar’s transformation from a romantic to an action hero stirred curiosity, but some fans feel the movie didn’t quite hit the mark. While the action sequences impressed many, the storytelling left others feeling underwhelmed. With so much narrative hopping, the emotional weight the film aimed for got lost in translation. Fans of raw action might still want to give it a go, but for others, the lack of promotion and the challenging watch may not be enough to hold attention.
