Following the extended version of The Hema Committee report submitted to the Government of Kerala, the concept of an ‘internal committee’ or ‘I.C.’ is brought by the film professionals with the primary aim of ensuring the safety of women involved in and behind the spotlight.
The initiative is by a monitoring committee consisting of twenty-seven (27) members from different film organizations in the industry, including the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A.), led by the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce.
As per credible reports, this concept is based on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by WCC in the year 2022 which mentions the relevance of the Internal Committee in Malayalam cinema and the mandatory approval by the authorities in providing a No-Objection Certificate so that the project can be pulled off. Also, the inclusion of the POSH Act, which prohibits the sexual harassment of Women in the Workplace under Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal attributes.
On an important note, this concept also acts as a precursor for the ‘Hema Committee’s report, which can focus on its implementation with its reliant facts despite the allegations. Along with this, a good bunch of officials with integrity, as well as consideration for being an independent authority, can create a fruitful platform for its industry, and so is the workspace.
Film professionals, including actors Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Nikhila Vimal, and Namitha Pramod, writer-actor Syam Pushkaran, as well as singer Shahabaz Aman, explain the importance of forming I. Cs on film sets in the promotional video.
